Shakespeare knows what he wants to say in sonnet 130. He is honest and true in what he says to the women he loves. "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun/ coral is far more red than her lips' red" (lines 1,2). Shakespeare does not exaggerate his lovers looks. He knows that the compliments other men give to their women are unrealistic and fake. Nobody has eyes as bright as the sun, or lips as red as the color of coral. Those are impossible characteristics for somebody to have. He knows he does not have to lie to her about her looks because love is more important.
Bruno Mars' song, "Just the Way You Are" is a modern example of what Shakespeare is saying in sonnet 130. In the lyrics, Bruno says
"When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are"He and Shakespeare love their women for how they are, imperfections and all. Love does not need to be exaggerated.
I agree with what your saying Meg. I like how Shakespeare is down to earth and doesn't try to sugar coat everything. If I were in the woman's position, I would really appreciate how Shakespeare was honest with me. I hate it how guys cheese it up. It's annoying :p. Guys should take tips on this.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you Meg. It is nice how Shakespeare doesn't try and sugar coat things. You didn't really say much about him making fun of other men/authors saying things like "Your eyes are as bright as the sun." I just want to point out that the whole poem is satirical and pokes fun of other men who lie to their lovers and tell them what they're not.
